The Book of the Hakutaku: a Bestiary of Japanese Monsters

Created by The Book of the Hakutaku

The Book of the Hakutaku is an illustrated bestiary of yokai—the spirits, monsters, and ghosts from traditional Japanese folklore. It is the third volume of my yokai encyclopedia. It has over 100 yokai, each one translated from Japanese folklore and fully illustrated.

Shipping Update!
about 5 years ago – Tue, Mar 19, 2019 at 01:09:35 AM

Greetings backers!

I'm happy to say that finally, after what feels like a very long wait, I was able to ship the last of the packages this morning!

This delay was due to extra precautionary measures taken by the freight company to make sure nothing would get held up in US customs. The trade war situation in the US right now has made importing products from Asia tricky, and the freighters told me that shipments have been getting seized for up to six months or more, so I was happy for the extra effort to ensure that won't happen to your books.

It will still take a few weeks before people start receiving their books. They still have to go through shipping and customs before they head out to delivery, but I will keep you guys informed of the progress and let you know when you can start eagerly watching your mailboxes.

It's a massive relief to have the books in motion once again. And it's also amazing to see my floor and walls again, as my entire first floor has felt like a warehouse for the longest time!

As you can see, I haven't even been able to take down my Christmas lights yet!
As you can see, I haven't even been able to take down my Christmas lights yet!
But there's at least been a small space by the front door so I can get in and out.

This room is neck-deep in boxes. I haven't seen the floor in months!

Somehow it all seems so much smaller seeing all of the boxes in the truck... Is that really all of it??

I'll have more updates as information becomes available to me. In the meantime, you can satisfy your yokai thirst by keeping an eye on my Facebook and Twitter!

March Update
about 5 years ago – Wed, Mar 06, 2019 at 01:02:46 AM

Greetings yokai lovers!

Here's an update on the current status of shipping:

By now, everyone in Oceania and East Asia should have received their packages. However, backers in Europe, North America, and South America will unfortunately have to wait a little bit longer.

The reason for that is that those shipments are being handled through a fulfillment company in the USA; and recently, customs and importing goods in the US has become much more difficult. I'm working with a ocean freight company to make sure the importation goes smoothly, and they are being very helpful in assisting with clearing all of the customs hurdles. It seems that pretty strict regulations have been placed on products coming from Asia, so there's a lot of extra paperwork that needs to be done in order to make sure the packages don't get seized or held up in customs for a long time.

The good news is that most of that paperwork was finished last month. Now I am arranging the final steps with the shipping company, and I'm expecting the last of the packages to ship very soon.

My fingers are crossed that the next update will be to say that everything is on its way to you.

February Update
about 5 years ago – Thu, Feb 07, 2019 at 02:02:02 AM

Greetings yokai lovers!

I just wanted to take a moment to write a quick update to keep everyone in the loop.

You may have noticed in the comments that people are beginning to receive their shipments. As of now, Asia and Oceania have all been sent out, and if you're in that area you should either have already gotten your books, or they will be arriving very soon!

North/South America and Europe/Africa will be shipping very soon. I'm expecting to send out the whole remainder next week. So if you're in those areas, it will still be a few weeks before you get your packages.

In the meantime, if you need to change your address for any reason, it can still be done. Please send me a message with your new info as soon as possible.

I will post again when I send off the final shipment.

January Update (Shipping)
over 5 years ago – Mon, Jan 21, 2019 at 01:30:46 AM

Greetings yokai lovers!

I've got some good news. The delivery of reprinted books arrived this morning! That means that I can finally continue with shipping the remainder of the books.

You may have noticed from the comments that some people received their books last week. As of now, Japan shipments have all been completed, so everyone in Japan should have received their books (or will be receiving them very shortly). Asia/Oceania is currently shipping, so those will be delivered within a week or two. Europe and North/South America orders will take a few more weeks, as they have to be shipped off to the fulfillment center once I finish with the inspection of the newly delivered books.

It's been a delay of almost exactly 2 months, but things are finally moving once again!

New Years Update
over 5 years ago – Tue, Jan 08, 2019 at 12:57:24 AM

Greetings yokai lovers, and Happy New Year! 明けましておめでとうございます!I hope you all enjoyed your holidays!

I was trying to wait until I had some hard dates before writing an update, but I didn't want to get too far into 2019 before posting anything.

The printers kind of flip-flopped on how they were going to ship the reprinted books. At first they were going to ship them by boat like they did with the first batch. Then, because the boat would arrive over the holiday and thus incur some delays, they told me they would ship by air to get things over with sooner. Finally, they changed their minds back to boat. Fortunately, I do have the bill of lading now, which means the books are on their way to me from Korea and should arrive very soon.

East Asia and Oceania shipments will be going out soon as well. Those will be posted from me in Japan. That covers Australia, China & Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand. The rest of the shipments are going to be handled by the North America distributor, so they will go out a few weeks later, once the reprinted books are finished with inspection, packing, and shipping to North America.

Not much longer! I'll post another update when I have some hard dates!
