The Book of the Hakutaku: a Bestiary of Japanese Monsters

Created by The Book of the Hakutaku

The Book of the Hakutaku is an illustrated bestiary of yokai—the spirits, monsters, and ghosts from traditional Japanese folklore. It is the third volume of my yokai encyclopedia. It has over 100 yokai, each one translated from Japanese folklore and fully illustrated.

Finishing Up

Greetings yokai lovers!

With the last of the packages arriving in backers' hands, it's about time to bring this project to a close.

I wanted to take this last opportunity to thank you all for your participation. I am so grateful that you chose to support my project. This was my biggest Kickstarter to date. The sheer size of the project presented some unique challenges, but I'm really proud of the final results. This would not have been possible without all of your help, so thank you all so much for being a part of it!

I hope you'll join me again in a few years when I launch book #4! :)

About My Patreon Project

If you enjoyed this Kickstarter and want to continue to receive regular yokai updates, please consider joining my Patreon project.

As you may know, I create yokai year-round with the help of supporters of my Patreon project. Patreon is kind of like Kickstarter, only instead of pledging a one time amount for a single project, you pledge a small amount ($1 or more) monthly for continued support. It's like a crowdfunding subscription.

The yokai I create in Patreon will eventually make their way into my next yokai encyclopedia. I take requests and feedback from my patrons, so my patrons are directly shaping the format of the next book.

Patrons can also get additional benefits like monthly yokai postcards with doodles on them (like the spider lady you see above), hi-res images, prints and paintings. I also share sketches, line art, and other insight on each yokai with my patrons that doesn't always make it to my books or yokai.com. It's sort of like behind-the-scenes VIP access.

If you enjoyed getting Kickstarter's updates on the book progress, I think you'd really enjoy the Patreon project; it's like that, but year-round. You can learn more here:  https://www.patreon.com/osarusan

Book Reviews
almost 5 years ago – Tue, May 21, 2019 at 02:48:49 AM

Hey backers!

Now that all of your packages are on their way to you, I've released The Book of the Hakutaku on Amazon.com for the public to order.

I have one more favor I'd like to ask of you guys.

If you enjoy the books, could I ask you to write a review for them on Amazon? It can be amazon.com, or amazon.co.uk, or amazon.jp, or amazon.ca, or whatever your local Amazon page may be. The reason I ask is that after the Kickstarter, Amazon becomes my main point of sale for books. So the more people who see positive reviews there, the more likely they will be to support me, and then I can continue making more yokai books!

If you'd like to write a review, you can use these links to the books' Amazon pages:

The Book of the Hakutaku:  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0985218452/

The Hour of Meeting Evil Spirits:  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0985218436/

The Night Parade of One Hundred Demons:  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0985218428/

I really appreciate all of your enthusiasm, and your positive messages and emails, and shares on social media. You guys are the best backers ever!

Ordering Extra Items
almost 5 years ago – Fri, May 17, 2019 at 12:43:48 AM

Hey backers!

I've had a few inquiries about ordering extra copies of the books now that everything is shipped out and on its way to you.

The Book of the Hakutaku will join Night Parade and Evil Spirits on Amazon paperback print-on-demand pretty soon, but I have a number of copies of this first print run remaining, as well as hardcovers, slipcases, bookmarks, and clothing.

I will be offering the extra items for sale to the public pretty soon, but I am giving all of you a chance to claim them before I announce their availability.

Hardcovers, slipcases, t-shirts, hoodies, and happi are all pretty limited in number, and once they sell out I won't be making more until the next Kickstarter.

If you'd like to order any extra items before I announce their availability to the public, please send me a message.

May Update
almost 5 years ago – Wed, May 01, 2019 at 03:15:05 AM

Greetings backers!

I've received word from the shipping center that packages are currently going out! In fact, it sounds like a few backers have already received their shipments. So I suspect within the next week or two almost everyone will have received their packages.

It's possible that with the speed of the mail it may take up to 3 more weeks for some locations in Europe, Africa, and South America, so please don't panic if your package doesn't arrive by next week.

If your package arrives and something is missing/damaged or there are any problems, please send me a message via Kickstarter and we'll sort things out.

I'll post another update soon, when I hear from the shippers that the last of the packages has gone out.

April Update
about 5 years ago – Mon, Apr 08, 2019 at 01:46:44 AM

Greetings backers!

There's not much to report at this time, but I wanted to check in and give you all a little update.

Shipping is in progress. Your packages are all aboard a boat called The Humber Bridge, currently over the Pacific Ocean. It's pretty amazing what we can see with today's technology; you can actually track the ship online, with live locations visible on Google Maps:  https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/details/ships/shipid:462041/mmsi:372038000/imo:9302140/vessel:HUMBER_BRIDGE

As you can see, the ship is due to arrive in Los Angeles on April 17, after which it will pass through customs, and on to the fulfillment center in Nevada. If we estimate just under a week for customs, it means your books will be on their final trip to you in just a few more weeks.

I'll post again when I have more information from the shipping company. In the meantime, you can feed your yokai cravings by reading some of my recent yokai posts on my public Patreon page and on yokai.com!
