Who is this book for?

My yokai encyclopedias have popular with fans of anime, manga, and Japanese culture in general. People interested in folklore and mythology also will appreciate the uniqueness of Japanese yokai. In addition, many tabletop gamers and fans of RPGs have found these book useful as monster manuals for Japanese and Asian themed role playing games.

What age is this book appropriate for?

The book is primarily aimed at adult readers, but mature young readers should be able to enjoy it as well. While many of the creatures in this encyclopedia are G-rated, Japanese folklore can be violent and raunchy at times. Some entries deal with murder, rape, or abuse. Some of the artwork depicts blood, gore, and occasional nudity. I take care to present the folklore as authentically as possible, without sanitizing it and without exaggeration.

Why do your books cost so much?

My books are self published and printed using print-on-demand services. This drives the cost to produce each book up higher than your typical mass-produced paperbacks, which are usually printed in quantities of tens of thousands. I also print in full color with the highest quality papers and inks offered. Even it they may be more expensive than most graphic novels, considering the size (approx. 224 pages) and quality of the book, I hope you’ll feel that the book is worth the cost.

Can I add items to my pledge later?

Yes, for a time. I will be using Backerkit, so after the Kickstarter ends you will still be able to adjust your pledge level and get the add-ons that you want. However, once the book goes into printing, it will no longer be possible to add items on.

Can you sign my book?

The collector’s editions (hardcovers) will all be signed by me. With the paperbacks, I am not offering two versions: signed and unsigned.

The reason for this is that because I live in Japan, for me to sign everyone’s books requires two international shipments: one from the printer to me, and then one more from me to you. The shipping costs add up to quite a bit per book.

For people who want to save money on shipping, you can choose to unsigned paperback. I have included a separate backer option for a signed paperback, with an increased shipping cost attached to it.

How do I choose my art print/t-shirt design?

After all of the paintings have been finished, I will create an online gallery with all of the artwork for backers to view. When you add an art print as an add on to your cart in Backerkit, you’ll be asked which yokai you would like for your print.

The t-shirts will work similarly. You’ll be asked which one(s) you want as well as what shirt size in Backerkit.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
