The Book of the Hakutaku: a Bestiary of Japanese Monsters

Created by The Book of the Hakutaku

The Book of the Hakutaku is an illustrated bestiary of yokai—the spirits, monsters, and ghosts from traditional Japanese folklore. It is the third volume of my yokai encyclopedia. It has over 100 yokai, each one translated from Japanese folklore and fully illustrated.

Latest Updates from Our Project:

New Add-On (600% achieved!)
over 6 years ago – Wed, Oct 04, 2017 at 10:07:28 AM

Greetings yokai fans!

Incredibly, we passed 200 backers, and 600% funding today! We also became a featured "Project We Love" on Kickstarter's homepage! So good news all around!

A-Yokai-A-Day

As you probably are aware (but just in case you're not), every October I publish A-Yokai-A-Day on my blog matthewmeyer.net. Most of the yokai I am showcasing this year are going to end up in The Book of the Hakutaku. So if you're eager to get a little yokai preview of what's to come in the next few months, you can read the daily blog posts. Here is today's post!

New Add On

There's been a lot of requests for ebook versions of the previous two books, so I am adding that in today as a new add on goal.

Please be aware: the ebooks for Night Parade and Evil Spirits are currently available already on Amazon.com (or your home country's Amazon page). So if you prefer to have them in a DRM-free Kindle format that is attatched to your Amazon account, you may prefer to buy them there. However, for the Kickstarter, I will be offering them as DRM-free PDF and .mobi (Kindle format).

The .mobi file is the same file you would get if you bought the book from Amazon, the only difference being you would have to manually add it to your device, rather than automatically syncing it with your device. The PDF will be an exact replica of the print book, so it will be beautiful, but large in size.

Normally the ebooks are $5 each on Amazon, but I am offering the two of them together for $5 each. So, if you increase your pledge by $5, you can get all three books in ebook format!

Thanks for backing the project! More coming soon!

Yokai postcard set unlocked (200% reached!)
over 6 years ago – Tue, Oct 03, 2017 at 07:02:36 AM

Greetings backers!

Though it's only been a short while since the previous update, I just wanted to share that we broke 200% a moment ago, and the yokai postcard set has been unlocked.

If you'd like to add the postcard set to your pledge, just increase your amount by $20. You don't need to add any additional shipping.

If you're a Patreon backer, you're already familiar with these postcards as I send them out monthly to my Patreon patrons. They are beautiful, with a glossy finish and lightfast inks. They are great for sending to friends, or even framed in small postcard-sized frames to hang on your walls!

The final images will be selected after the book is finished; the postcards in the image above are just samples.

Yokai bookmark unlocked (400% already?!)
over 6 years ago – Tue, Oct 03, 2017 at 07:02:32 AM

Greetings backers!

We just passed 400%! In less than 24 hours! Apparently you guys were busy while I was sleeping here in Japan. We passed 300% while I was asleep, so I owe you two new stretch goals!

Here is one of them: the yokai bookmark!

If you have the bookmark from my last Kickstarter, it is based on the same template, so it will be very similar to that one.

The Book of the Hakutaku bookmark will feature designs on the front and the back. The design is not yet finalized, but it will be similar to the sample image above. It will come with a tassel and a matte finish. It is the perfect companion for the collector's set, and a great way to mark your favorite yokai in the book!

Please note the two prices: the bookmark add on is $5 if you are already receiving a shipment directly from me (if you are getting the collector's edition or signed paperbacks), or $10 if you are not receiving a shipment directly from me (i.e. the unsigned paperback).

This is because I can just slip it into your shipment at no extra cost if I am already mailing you something, but if you are getting an unsigned book I will have to make a new package to send to you, since the unsigned books ship directly to you from the printer.

More coming soon!
